the challengeTraditionally ship design has followed an evolutionary, not a revolutionary process. Changes have generally been incorporated into established solutions, i.e. replacing sail with propulsion machinery.
By contrast, today’s designers are offered so many options in terms of hull forms, system solutions and materials of construction that the challenges of integrating them into a low risk solution is as demanding as the creation of the initial inventive concept.
Much can be done to validate design concepts using state of the art analysis tools backed up by physical model tests. However, managing the various analytical processes to achieve a robust solution goes beyond specialist domain knowledge and requires a wider understanding of the design process. |
